WENHAM — The Lynnfield High boys’ lacrosse team defeated host Hamilton-Wenham, 9-4 on a sunny, warm day on Monday afternoon. With that win, the Pioneers improved to 8-5 overall and 5-4 in the Cape Ann League.
The Generals, meanwhile, fell to 2-9 overall and 0-8 in the league.
“It was nice to get back on track after we lost our last game,” said Pioneers head coach Pat Lamusta. “Our defense made a quota of only allowing one goal per quarter and we ended up allowing the four overall.”
In the second half, the defense gave up just one goal as the Pioneers led, 6-3, at halftime as LHS led wire-to-wire.
Will Norton led the offense with four goals while Owen Considine and Kelan Cardinal each had a team-high with three assists. Each player also scored once.
Drew Damiani had one goal and one assist while Mike Murphy and Evan Rocha had the other two goals.
Pioneer goalie, Ben Pimentel, made eight stops as his record improved to 8-5.
On May 5, the Pioneers were nipped, 10-9, at Manchester-Essex.
The Hornets led this one, 5-2 at the break, but the Pioneers chipped away and took their first lead at, 9-8, in the fourth quarter. However, the host scored the game’s final two goals with the game-winner coming with less that two minutes left.
“We played much cleaner in the second half,” said Lamusta. “We committed too many penalties in the first half allowing them to have too many man-up situations.”
Cardinal led the attack with four goals and four assists.
“That was his best game of the season,” stated Lamusta, about the sophomore.
Norton scored twice while Considine had one goal and a pair of assists. Damiani and Murphy had the two other goals.
Aidan Norton led the team in ground balls with three. Pimentel turned back ten shots on net.
On May 3, the Pioneers rolled over rival North Reading, 15-2, on the road to complete the season sweep over the Hornets.
Lynnfield took control early as they were up at halftime 7-1.
“We played a very strong game,” said Lamusta.
Face-off specialist, Bryce Kay, went 13 for 16 in face-offs. He also had one goal and one assist.
Will Norton and Considine both scored a team-high five goals while Cardinal had three goals and six assists to end the day with nine points.
Considine also had one assist, as did Murphy.
James Sharkey had the other Lynnfield goal.
Aidan Norton led the team in ground balls, again, with four while Pimentel had 12 stops.
The next game for Lynnfield will be on May 12 as they go to Peabody to take on Bishop Fenwick in a non-league match-up. That game will start at 4 p.m.
The team then returns to Cape Ann League play on May 15 as they visit Triton at 5:45 p.m. Lynnfield beat the Vikings in the first meeting, 10-6, back on April 10.
