LYNNFIELD — Brent Munroe is back for his 21st season as head coach of the Lynnfield High boys’ soccer team. Last fall, the Pioneers were tri-champs of the Cape Ann League with North Reading and Newburyport as they went 7-1-2. There was no state or league tournament last year due to the pandemic.

That team had 10 seniors, including three starters, who graduated. Two of them were CAL All-Conference players: Dante Gesamondo (goalie) and Luke Martinho (center back).

The Pioneers had 10 veterans back this year when practice started on Aug. 23. The seniors back are Dom Ferrante (center-midfielder), Jake Mallett (defenseman), Chase Carney (goalie) and Brian Costa (forward).

Ferrante and Mallett are the two captains while Carney is moving positions as he played outside- midfielder last year.

Ferrante was a CAL All-Star last year.

The 11th-graders back are Drew Damiani (defenseman), Owen Klee (midfielder), Alex Gentile (center- midfielder), Christian Murphy (defenseman) and Henry Caulfield (midfielder- forward).

Demetri Dono is the lone sophomore back and he is a defenseman.

“Practice went well the first week,” said Munroe, about the opening week. “We have a lot of good kids on the team including a bunch of scorers back.”

On Monday, they lost at home to St. John’s Prep, 1-0, in their first scrimmage.

Their second scrimmage will be on Sept. 1 at Beverly at 4 p.m. The final preseason game is on Sept. 4 at 10 a.m. as they go to Wilmington.

Lynnfield will play an 18-game regular season schedule with 14 league games and four non-league contests. They will play Greater Lowell twice, Masconomet and North Andover in their non-league games.

Lynnfield will open the 2021 campaign on Tuesday, Sept. 7 when they travel to North Andover at 4 p.m.
