BOXFORD – First place in the Cape Ann League Kinney division was on the line last Friday afternoon as the Lynnfield High boys’ soccer team visited Masconomet. After losing to the Chieftains the first time, the Pioneers were able to get one point with a 2-2 draw.

With that result, the Pioneers record went to 13-1-2 overall and 12-1-2 in the CAL as they Chieftains were able to stay in first.

“They beat us pretty good the first time at our place so I was happy with the result,” said Lynnfield head coach Brent Munroe. “This was a huge game for us because we have not beat them in several years so to come out with a tie was very good..”

Nathan Bass got the locals on the scoreboard 15 minutes into the opening half as he headed a free kick by Luke Martinho into the Chieftain net.

The hosts tied the game up ten minutes later.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Chieftains took their first lead but, 15 minutes later, Tom Buston tied it with the assists going to John Luders and Dave Gentile. That goal came off a corner kick.

Lynnfield goalie, Jack Campbell, made 15 saves to go to 13-1-2 in net.

“Jack played very well,” stated Munroe.

Shut out Pentucket

On Oct. 17, the Pioneers blanked guest Pentucket, 4-0, to complete the season sweep over the Sachems.

“I was very pleased with the way we started,” recalled Munroe, as his squad struck for three first-half goals.

Gentile headed in the first goal on a corner with Luders assisting. Buston had the second tally unassisted while Max Sieger made it 3-0 assisted by Alejandro Lynch.

Bass had the second-half goal assisted by Sieger.

Campbell made six saves to record his seventh complete-game shutout of the fall.

This Saturday, the Pioneers wrap up the regular season as they host Austin Prep at 5 p.m. Lynnfield is looking for the season sweep over the non-league Cougars.

On Halloween, the Division 3 North playoff seedings come out as Lynnfield is gunning for that top seed.
