WEST NEWBURY — Last Friday afternoon, the Lynnfield High boys soccer team tied host Pentucket 1-1. With that result, the Pioneers record went to 9-7-1 overall and 7-7-1 in the Cape Ann League.

Lynnfield went 0-1-1 against the Sachems this season as Pentucket won the first meeting 2-1 on Sept. 20.

“It was a great result for us to get that tie,” stated Pioneers’ head coach Brent Munroe. “They are in first place in the (Cape Ann League) Kinney division but I felt that we had more scoring opportunities than they did.”

After a scoreless opening half, the locals got on the scoreboard first in the second half as Alex Gentile scored assisted by Jack Bird and Matteus Sarrento with the tally coming off a corner kick in the 20th minute.

The Sachems tied it on a free kick with a little over three minutes left in the game.

Pioneer goalie Dante Gesamondo made six saves to go to 9-7-1 in net.

Munroe was also pleased with the effort of junior center-back Luke Martinho.

The Pioneers are in fifth place in the CAL Kinney division with that tie.

On Oct. 16, the Pioneers lost at Manchester-Essex 2-1.

“I was very impressed with that team,” said Munroe, about the CAL Baker division leading Hornets. “They did very well against our (Kinney) division too.”

On a free kick by Tom Hauser, Tom Buston put home the rebound in the first half.

However, the hosts responded with two goals in the second stanza. They tied it up in the 15th minute on a penalty kick. Manchester-Essex then won it 10 minutes later off a free kick.

“They should go very deep in the Division 4 tournament,” stated Munroe.

Gesamondo had 12 saves in that game.

Lynnfield wrapped up its regular season on Oct. 22 as they hosted Masconomet (results not available at press time).

The Pioneers will find out on Nov. 1 who they will open with in the first round of the division 3 North state tournament.

Because of the layoff in between games, Munroe is working on trying to get a scrimmage for next week to keep his squad sharp.
