Meet top-seeded Watertown in semifinals on Thursday at Reading High

LYNNFIELD — On Saturday afternoon, the Lynnfield High field hockey team beat guest Weston, 3-1, in the Division 2 North quarterfinals. With that win , the fourth-seeded Pioneers improved to 16-3-1 and they will now face top-seeded Watertown in the semifinals on Thursday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. at Reading High School.

With the loss, the fifth-seeded Wildcats, a team out of the Dual County League, ended up at 14-5-1.

Jen Flynn scored the first goal of the afternoon with 16:44 left off a corner. Carolyn Garofoli, whose shot was redirected into the net by Flynn, got the assist.

Weston’s Ani Dahl evened the game with 4:32 left in the half.

Lynnfield took the lead for good with 22:38 left in the second half on Flynn’s second goal with Lily Rothwell assisting.

Rothwell then had the final goal on a rebound of her own shot with 2:48 to play.

“We played as a team with each player doing their job and doing it well,” said Pioneers head coach Maime Reardon. “Brianna (Barrett) and Carolyn had great games as well as Abby (Buckley)in the back field. Ashley (Barrett) did a great job bringing the ball down field and penetrating their circle.”

Lynnfield goalie, Emily Dickey, made seven saves against the Wildcats.

Shut out Spartans in first round

In the first-round game on Nov. 1, the Pioneers blanked visiting Stoneham, 4-0, as the 13th-seeded Spartans ended up at 9-8-2.

“The girls took control of the game early on and never let up,” said Reardon. “ All of our senior substitutes got in and helped us keep the shutout.”

Less than three minutes into the game, Flynn scored assisted by Ashley Barrett and Rothwell. Buckley and Garofoli then assisted on Maddie Murphy’s tally off a corner with 18:25 left in the first half.

Rothwell then scored with 23 minutes left in the game, also off a corner, assisted by Flynn and then Rothwell assisted on Brianna Barrett’s goal with 19:10 left.

Dickey had three saves in goal.
