NEWBURYPORT — Last Friday evening, the Lynnfield High girls’ basketball team lost at Newburyport, 59-48. With that defeat, the Pioneers record dropped to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in the Cape Ann League.

“We had too many turnovers late,” acknowledged Lynnfield first-year head coach Peter Bocchino . “We really beat ourselves in that game.”

The Pioneers led, 29-28, at the half but the Clippers were able to take control late and capitalized on the Lynnfield turnovers as they outscored them 31-19 in the second half.

THE PIONEER defense forced plenty of turnovers that led to easy buckets during their win over Hamilton-Wenham on Jan. 2 at LHS. Pictured are Victoria Morelli (5), Catherine MacDonald (4) and Caroline Waisnor (10). (Dan Pawlowski Photo)

Kate MacDonald led the Pioneers in scoring with 12 points while Melissa Morelli added 10 points. MacDonald and Melissa’s twin sister, Victoria, led the team in rebounds with seven each.

Victoria Morelli and Caroline Waisner both chipped in nine points each.

Conquer Generals

The news was much better for the locals on Jan. 2 as Lynnfield rolled over guest Hamilton-Wenham, 68-49, in a game they pulled away in the second half.

“We scored a majority of our points because we were able to beat their press,” pointed out Bocchino. “We played an overall solid game.”

Lynnfield led this one, 34-24, at the half as they outscored the Generals, 34-25, in the second half.

MacDonald and Victoria Morelli both led Lynnfield in scoring with 18 points each while Melissa Morelli led the team in rebounds with seven.

On Jan. 11, the Pioneers welcome North Reading with tip-off for that game starting at 6 p.m.

Next Tuesday night, also at 6 p.m., Ipswich comes to town.
