LYNNFIELD — The girls’ soccer team concluded the first week of the 2022 season with a tie and a loss.

Lynnfield (0-1-1) tied archrival North Reading 1-1 on Sept. 8.

Sophomore midfielder Emma Rose gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead after scoring on a breakaway with 19 minutes remaining in the first half. Freshman Bella Sykes had the assist.

“It was a great goal,” said Pioneers head coach Mark Vermont. “Emma played a great game.”

The Hornets tied the game at one with eight minutes remaining in the game.

Junior goalie Ava Gamache recorded three saves in net.

Vermont said the Pioneers played an excellent defensive game against North Reading.

“We played well defensively and we did some really nice things in the midfield,” said Vermont.

Vermont said the Hornets were able to secure the tie by putting a lot of pressure on the Pioneers at the end of the contest.

“North Reading always puts a ton of pressure on teams at the end of games,” said Vermont. “We have to learn from that and keep moving forward.”

Falls to Marblehead

Lynnfield opened the 2022 season falling 1-0 to Marblehead in a rain-soaked contest on Sept. 6.

The Pioneers and Magicians were locked in a defensive battle for the majority of the contest. Marblehead scored the only goal of the game after nailing a shot from the 12-yard line with three minutes remaining in the game.

Vermont said junior defender/midfielder Keely Briggs played well against Marblehead.

“Keely did a nice job for us,” said Vermont.

Gamache tallied four saves in the cage.

“Ava had a great save in the beginning of the game that kept the score tied 0-0,” said Vermont.

Vermont said the Pioneers gave a valiant effort against Marblehead.

“The girls played well,” said Vermont. “We deserved to get the tie, but Marblehead was able to score off an unlucky bounce.”
