LYNNFIELD — In their final meet of the season, the Lynnfield High girls indoor track and field team stepped up in class as they welcomed Newburyport last Thursday afternoon (all of the meets are outdoors due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The Clippers are in the Cape Ann League Kinney (large) Division while the Pioneers are in the CAL Baker (small).

The visitors handed the Pioneers their only loss of the season winning 54-27 at Lynnfield Middle School. With that defeat, the Pioneers ended the year at 4-1 as they won the CAL Baker division.

Newburyport finished the season unbeaten going 4-0-1 as they are the CAL Kinney champs.

“They are an awesome team and have much more depth than we do,” admitted Pioneers first-year head coach Adam Dell’Aria.

Lynnfield recorded only two wins in the meet, April Luders in the 55-meters (8.6), and Riley Hallahan in the shot-put (30-10).

The Pioneers had four second-place finishes, Luders in the shot-put (28-9), Katie Cash in the two mile (14:18), Lauren Braconnier in the 600-meters (1:46), and Jasmine Rose in the 55-meter hurdles (9.3).

Five Pioneers finished third, Olivia Reska in the 55-meters (8.3), Kaleigh Weeks in the mile (6:36), Julia Seelig in the two mile (14:51), Olivia Goguen in the high jump (3-10), and Madison Murphy in the high jump (25-11).

The high jump was the lone event that Lynnfield was able to sweep the top three spots.

Another highlight was that the team recorded a school-record time of 1:54.34 in the 4×200 relay. Murphy, Rose, Braconnier and Luders were the foursome.

“Normally, we don’t do the 4×200 in the indoor season,” explained Dell’Aria. “This event was not officially scored but it still counts in the school record book.”

The LHS record of 1:56.34 lasted 12 years as it took place back in 2009.
