LYNNFIELD — At their end-of-season banquet, seven members of the Lynnfield High boys track and field team received awards from their coaching staff.
Senior co-captain Chase Goldberg was given the team’s MVP Award. Goldberg was also the team’s lone Cape Ann League All-Star as he made the first-team in the javelin.
Freshmen Zahir Mitchell and Nick Kelter both took home the Rookie of the Year Award.
Three Pioneers received the Coaches’ Award, Those three are senior captains Anthony Attubato, Jack DiGangi and Angelo DeLuca.
The Lynnfield Scholar Athlete Award went to senior Ethan Downey.
The Pioneers went 2-2 this season as they beat Ipswich (86-58) and Hamilton-Wenham (94-47) and lost to North Reading (101-44) and Amesbury (91.5- 53.5).
They came in second place in the CAL Barker division behind Amesbury.
In the league meet,. they came in sixth place overall out of eight schools.
“We had a good year,” said Pioneers assistant coach Adam Dell’Aria, who just finished his seventh season as assistant coach. “Our biggest contributors were the senior and sophomore class.”
Along with Attubato, DiGangi, DeLuca, Downey and Goldberg, the team will lose two other seniors to graduation, Kevin Connolly and Gavin Fair.
“Our seven seniors were big point scorers for us this year,” said Dell’Aria. “We are going to have big shoes to fill without them, especially with their leadership.”
The seniors also had to miss their freshman year due to Covid.
Next spring, the team is slated to return 34 total members with 14 of them varsity returners
“We should be good next year,” said Dell’Aria. “We have a strong core coming back in the field events.”
The CAL will have a new addition next season as Essex Tech enters the league.
