NORWELL — While nobody from the Lynnfield High girls’ track and field team medaled in the Division 5 state meet at Norwell High over Memorial Day weekend there was several personal-best finishes by the Pioneers which made head coach Christine Smith very happy.

“Just about everybody who we brought recorded a personal-best,” said Smith. “What is good is that most of them came from underclassmen which bodes well for next year.”

Emilie Bell was the closest to receiving a medal as the junior placed 10th in the discus with a toss of 92 feet (only the top eight in each event medal).

Fellow junior, Olivia Goguen, had a personal-best time in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:13.89.

Another 11th-grader, Viola Wertz, ran the two-mile in 2:34.89 for a personal-best.

“She ran an amazing race,” stated Smith. “That was 34 seconds better then her previously best time.”

Wertz also teamed up with Abby Lopez, Gabby Bottaro, and Chloe Cieslewicz, in the 4×800 relay and they had a team-best time of 11:09.43.

“That was 32 seconds better than our former best time,” said Smith.

Lopez and Cieslewicz are just freshmen while Bottaro is a sophomore.

Lynnfield had one of the smallest rosters in the Cape Ann League this spring with only 31 members and no Pioneer made the CAL All-Star team this season.

The Pioneers went 0-4 in the regular season and 0-3 in the CAL Baker Division.
