LYNNFIELD — Peter Marinelli is back for his 11th season as the head coach of the Lynnfield High softball team this spring. Last year, the Pioneers finished at 8-6 overall as they lost to Winthrop in the first round of the Division 3 North state tournament.

They tied Newburyport for second place in the Cape Ann League Kinney Division behind North Reading going 8-5.

Two seniors, Reilly Ganter and Chloe Shapleigh, graduated from that squad and they were both CAL First-Team All-Stars last year.

Ten veterans, including seven starters, are back this season. Three of them are this year’s captains: Maddie Condon (senior- catcher), Lauren Amico (junior- pitcher-second baseman) and Celia Carbone (junior- utility).

The other four starters back are Ava Marotta (junior- third baseman-left fielder), Abi Travers (junior- first baseman), Ava Gamache (sophomore- third baseman- left fielder) and Sophia Brown (sophomore- pitcher).

The three other players back are Catie Kampersal (sophomore- outfielder), Trinity Gesamondo (junior- outfielder) and Ella Cammarata (senior- outfielder).

Junior catcher, Marianne Lane, is the team’s newcomer as she was on the Pioneers’ junior varsity team last season.

Lynnfield started practice on March 21 and last Saturday, they had their first pre-season games as they hosted Winchester, St. Mary’s of Lynn and Danvers in mini-games.

“We have a ways to go,” admitted Marinelli. “We have to slowly improve as the season goes along.”

Lynnfield will play 13 league games and seven non-league ones. Their non-league games will be home-and-homes against East Boston, Boston Latin Academy and Austin Prep. The other non-leaguer will be against Hamilton-Wenham as they will play then in a league game and a non-league one.

The season opener is on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. as they visit East Boston. They then host Newburyport on Friday afternoon at 3:45 p.m. in the CAL opener. On April 11, the Pioneers go to Triton with that game starting at 3:45 p.m. as well.
