LYNNFIELD — The Select Board is accepting nominations for the Daniel Townsend Award for Excellence now through Halloween.

The Townsend Award, which was first proposed by former Select Board member Chris Barrett, was created in 2017. The award is named after Daniel Townsend, who perished on April 19, 1775 in the first battle of the Revolutionary War.

The Select Board gives the Townsend Award annually in order to recognize people who have exemplified excellence in the area of volunteerism.

Late Planning Board/Conservation Commission member Donald Harriss and late Zoning Board of Appeals Chair John Smith were the recipients of the 2023 Townsend Award. Former Selectman/Town Moderator/Fields Committee Chair Arthur Bourque, late Selectman Al Merritt, retired Town Administrator/Selectman/Town Moderator H. Joseph Maney, former Selectman David Drislane, former Council on Aging Board of Directors Chair Fred Santangelo, retired Conservation Administrator Betty Adelson, late Selectman Dr. Robert Weiss and longtime volunteer Ellen Crawford have previously received the Townsend Award.

Residents can submit Townsend Award nominations to the Town Administrator’s Office by October 31. Townspeople may email them to Assistant Town Administrator Bob Curtin at  rcurtin@town.lynnfield.ma.us or mail to Town Administrator Office, 55 Summer Street, Lynnfield MA 01940.
