LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield Senior Babe Ruth (16- to 19-year-olds) team started its playoffs with mixed results.

In their first game of the double elimination tournament on Aug. 5, they fell 3-0 to Reading at Malden Catholic High School. They then bounced back on Aug. 6 to beat the Arlington Cardinals 12-8 at Ferullo Field in Woburn to keep their season alive.

In the win on Aug. 6, Nick Torosian was the winning pitcher, going 6 2/3 innings to go to 3-2 this summer. He finished with eight strikeouts and gave up eight runs, 12 hits and five walks.

Brian Cardarelli then recorded the final out to pick up the save, as there was runners on base.

The Lynnfield offense had 10 hits in the win, led by Mike Stellato and Cardarelli, who both went 3-4 with two runs batted in. Mike Federico was 2-3 with three runs scored.

“We got off to a great start,” said Lynnfield manager Tony Federico, as his team plated three runs in the first inning.

Loss to Reading

In the Reading game, the offense could only muster four hits as Lynnfield had no multiple hitters.

“Their pitcher had really good control and was able to hit the corners,” pointed out Federico. “He is very tough because we lost to him the other two times we faced him this year.”

Reading, the second seed, scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the third inning off losing pitcher Nick Aslanian (3-1). Aslanian pitched all six innings, allowing three runs, eight hits, three walks and fanning six.

Lynnfield, which is the seventh seed, went 12-8-2 in the regular season.
