LYNNFIELD — On Monday afternoon, the Lynnfield High softball team evened its record at the .500 mark as they hammered guest East Boston, 21-2, in a five-inning mercy-rule game.
The win improved the Pioneers’ record to 4-4 overall as they won their second game in a row.
“We took advantage of what they were giving us,” said Pioneers first-year head coach Hector Longo, as the Jets pitching allowed 17 runners by walk or by hit batsman.
The Pioneer offense had nine hits total led by Morgan Hubbard who went 3 for 4 with three runs batted in.
Abi Travers and Lily Williams both were 2 for 3 at the dish as Travers scored three times.
Lynnfield turned this game into a rout early plating nine runs in the bottom of the first inning.
They also completed the season sweep over the non-league Jets as they beat them, 13-11, in the season opener back on April 3.
Sophia Brown was the winning pitcher going five innings to improve to 3-4. She gave up two runs, three hits, three walks and she stuck out six.
On April 21, the Pioneers beat visiting Malden Catholic, 12-7, in another non-league game during school vacation week.
“We got down 4-0 in the first inning so I was happy with the way the girls fought back,” said Longo.
Down 7-6 in the fifth, the Pioneers scored five times to take the lead for good .
The offense had nine hits in this game led by Hubbard, again, as she went a perfect 3 for 3 with one RBI. Marotta was 2 for 3 with three runs scored while Travers went 2 for 4 with a team-high three RBI.
Brown pitched all seven innings in this one. She gave up six earned runs, 10 hits, three walks and she fanned three Lancer batters.
On April 19, Lynnfield lost at home to Pentucket, 18-4, to fall to 1-4 in the Cape Ann League.
“They have a good pitcher and we didn’t play well,” admitted Longo. .
The Panthers never trailed in this game as Lynnfield scored three times in the fourth inning and once more in the seventh.
In the fourth, Lauren Amico had a two-run single while Hubbard added a one-run single.
Libby Considine had the other RBI with a double in the bottom of the seventh.
The LHS offense had six hits with no multiple hitters.
On Wednesday, the Pioneers visit North Reading at 4:30 p.m. The next day, Hamilton-Wenham comes to town with that game starting at 4 p.m.
On May 1, the Pioneers play a non-league game as they host Boston Latin Academy. First pitch for that game is at 4 p.m.
