WAKEFIELD — The Unknowns got a much-needed win against the defending Twi League Champs High Life as Brett Maloney hurled a four-hit shutout, 1-0 to keep the Orange’s slim playoff hopes alive.

It was a great pitching duel between Maloney and Nick Dettore. Maloney allowed four hits, no walks, no runs, and struck out four. Dettore was equal to the task as he scattered three hits, one walk, one run and six strikeouts.

The Unknowns scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Kevin Murray led off with a walk and scooted to second as the High Life catcher tried to catch Murray rounding first base. Dave Lehman rocked a hit through the hole in the left side of the infield to move Murray to third base. The deceptively fast Lehman stole second base as the Highlife elected to try to throw him out, and Murray scampered home with the run.

The High Life threatened in the top of the sixth inning. After a strikeout, Dettore launched a double to deep right field. Maloney then plunked Mark DiNocco in the shoulder to put two runners on with one out. Maloney then induced High Life catcher Mark Sullivan to ground the ball to third base where Bryan Butt gobbled it up, stepped on third and threw a strike to first to nip the speedy Sullivan.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Maloney limited the High Life to a single before shutting down the defending champs and securing the win.

A big thank you goes out to the players who took the time to work on the Moulton Park infield to get it ready for the game. Unknowns Manager Ian Power said noting the drying of the field, “The power of the sun is a tremendous thing.”

The High Life The Unknowns next play Wednesday, July 25 at Moulton Park against The Slappers at 6 p.m. The High Life play the Brewers on Thursday, 6 p.m.
