WAKEFIELD — Mary Ann Doherty, 85, of Wakefield, died peacefully December 13, 2018 at the Bear Hill Nursing Center.

Born in South Boston on December 8, 1933 she was the daughter of the late Ignaz and Anna (Kevartas) Voveris.

Mrs. Doherty was raised and educated in South Boston. At the age of 16, she entered into the Convent and became Sister Perpetua at Our Lady of Sorrows and Jesus Christ Crucified Order. During her time in the Order, she taught religion in Cambridge, Lawrence and Norwood. She had a bachelor’s degree from Stonehill College and also received her master’s in Psychology from Bridgewater State College.

In 1965, Mrs. Doherty left the Convent and in 1970 met her husband, Herold F. Doherty. They were married in 1971. She continued her teaching career at the Franklin School in Wakefield where she was a well-loved second grade teacher. In 1981 and 1989, Mrs. Doherty was invited to, and attended, a scholarship program at the University of Vilnius, Lithuania. In 1995, she and her husband both retired and spent their time traveling. Together they loved to travel to Europe and Canada, and most especially enjoyed traveling to Bermuda every year for more than 40 years. Mrs. Doherty was a devout Catholic and was a parishioner at both St. Joseph Church of Wakefield and St. Theresa’s Church of North Reading.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Herold F. Doherty, with whom she shared 47 wonderful years of marriage. She leaves behind her two brothers, James and Edward; as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother John.

Her funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Monday at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield at 10 a.m. Interment, Forest Glade Cemetery, Wakefield. Visitation for relatives and friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 12-3 p.m.
