BOXFORD — The Masconomet-Lynnfield co-op girls’ gymnastics team had its end of the season team banquet on March 19 at Masconomet Regional High School. On that night, the newly-crowned state champions were given awards by their coaches.

Sophomore Peyton Coleman received the Most Outstanding Teammate award for the spirit and support she showed. The team members voted for that award.

Sophomore Sarah Aylwin took home the Coaches Award due to her work ethic.

This year, the Chieftains had co-MVP’s named. Sophomore Tracy Mowers and senior captain Katelyn Aylwin were the recipient’s of the award. Both of them competed in the All-Around exercise, as they spearheaded the Chieftains title run.

The Chieftains also elected next year’s captains during the banquet. Nicole Bonacorso and Cat DiNanno will be captains again next year when they are seniors. They will be joined by fellow juniors Kyra Flak and Gabbi Wayland.

The Masco-Lynnfield gymnastics team won the state title on March 2 at Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough. That evening, the Chieftains recorded a score of 148.975 to place first out of the eight teams there. Mansfield was second (146.650) while Newton South was third (146.575).

The week before, also at Algonquin, the Chieftains won the North Sectionals with a school-record score of 151.775.

The Chieftains finished a perfect 8-0 this season and won the NEC-CAL title for the second year in a row.

“This was a historic season,” stated Chieftains first-year head coach Alicia Gomes. “We had a great group of girls who worked hard and were able to accomplish great things.”

The team will lose two seniors to graduation. In addition to Katelyn Aylwin, they will also lose co-captain Danielle Tremblay.

“Not having those two for next year are significant losses for us,” admitted Gomes.

However, the rest of the team is slated to come back to defend the Chieftains’ title.

“We do have a great chance to do well again next year,” said Gomes.

Makayla Green, Amber Gamache and Lanah Rosenwald are the three Chieftains from Lynnfield. Green is a sophomore while Gamache and Rosenwald are both freshmen.

“Makayla could have a great impact for us next year,” said Gomes. “Amber and Lanah are good tumblers that we could use in the floor exercise.”
