WAKEFIELD — The MIAA’s mask-wearing protocols officially ended yesterday, however, masks will still be required for all spectators at Wakefield High’s three home playoff games this week.

In a recent press release, the MIAA stated that “to remain consistent with DESE mask requirement update, beginning Feb. 28, the MIAA mask-wearing protocol will end. Moving forward, as we navigate the winter Statewide Tournaments, we will adhere to the host school and venue-specific restrictions. Member schools will need to communicate with and respect the specific protocols set forth at the local level. Anyone who chooses to wear a mask may continue to do so.”

As determined by a Wakefield School Committee meeting on Feb. 15, the mask mandate in Wakefield schools will continue until March 9.

This means that masks will still be required at all sporting events for spectators, officials, coaches and student athletes. This includes tonight’s boys’ basketball game, 6 p.m. at the Charbonneau Field House against Masconomet as well as the boys’ hockey game against Somerset Berkley on Thursday night, 8 p.m. at the Stoneham Arena and the girls’ basketball game against Bedford on Friday night, 6:30 p.m. at the Charbonneau Field House.

If any of the three Warrior teams advance and play away games, the mask mandates will be determined by each of the host schools.

Mask mandates in specific school systems also extend to student athletes, so all players will also be expected to wear masks.
