The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association is voting today on whether to hold state tournaments for the spring season.

Sectional tournaments will be held in the spring as that vote was already passed by the Tournament Management Committee.

State tournaments would typically mean that four sectional champions would get to play in a state semifinal and state final to determine one state champion in their respective divisions.

It is unclear at this time which way the board is leaning in this vote. Bordering states such as Connecticut have approved state tournaments for the spring season, however, in addition to travel concerns in which some teams may need to drive across the state to compete in state tournament games, the MIAA will also need to consider the risk/benefits of extending the season another two games.

Groups of high school student athletes held a rally outside of MIAA headquarters in Franklin yesterday to support a vote for spring state tournaments, chanting “two more games.” The board will vote at 1 p.m.

Sports scheduled to compete in the spring season are baseball, softball, girls’ and boys’ lacrosse, girls’ and boys’ outdoor track and field, girls’ and boys’ tennis and wrestling, which could potentially take place outside.
