MELROSE—The Melrose High field hockey team waged a battle in their late season, reaching draws against two tough league rivals to finish the season.

On October 26, Melrose traveled to Wakefield (6-2) and pulled of a 1-1 defensive gem against a tough Warrior squad. Melrose took an early lead but saw Wakefield tie it up in the second half. According to coach Erin Parker, it was strong effort. “It was our best game of the season. We played our best field hockey for 60 minutes. Previously, we let different factors affect our game that resulted in us playing only 30 good minutes, so I was proud that they made this mental adjustment.”

Only a day later, Melrose hosted Burlington at Pine Banks and fought to another 1-1 battle. “It was a tough game for us. We emotionally put so much into the Wakefield game, our rivals, that I think playing Burlington the next day was tough. But we scored in both of our last games, which we struggled with all season, so I was happy with that progress.”

Though the team searched for wins much of the season, the coach is happy with the progress. “At our end of season team meeting, I listened to the girls reflect on our core values and they had some great insights into who they are as players and where they want to be next year. It made me very excited for next season.”

This year Melrose says goodbye to seniors, captains Sam Kroon and Lauren Freed, and Hannah Powell-Flatt, Nina Gesnaldo, Gabby Smith, and Ellen Zinah. “The seniors were a great group,” says Parker. “Our two senior captains were amazing – they were my lifeline to the team in many ways. And Gabby Smith took on a leadership role, despite not being a named captain. She was so vocal, especially on the field, that was it a good boost of energy for us. As my first senior class, they will definitely hold a special place in my heart. They are a great group of student athletes.”

Wrapping up her first season as coach has been a mutually enjoyable one for coach and team. “Melrose has welcomed me with open arms and I am so happy to be here,” says the coach. “The support from the Parks and Rec. Department, Mr. Fogarty, the parents, and the girls was amazing. I need to also specifically mention my coaching staff because of their dedication and help. I feel very lucky.”

As for next season? Parker hopes to see players come back fit and improved. Seven players return along with some promising junior varsity players. Already, many of her players are inquiring about winter leagues and club ball, which she notes, makes a difference. “They are already thinking about captains practices,” she says. “After the last game, my JV coach heard her the JV girls saying ‘Off-season starts now,’ It’s such a mature mindset. And I’ve repeated Belichick’s quote to the girls – ‘Every battle is won before it is fought.’ So I’m very optimistic for next season.”
