MELROSE — The Melrose Lady Raider lacrosse team earned their fourth win of the season with a 11-7 victory over Arlington Catholic on Friday, April 24 at Fred Green Field, thanks in part by Melrose junior Haley Maté who had five goals in the win.

Overall, there are a lot of things the Lady Raiders are doing well now. But one area they seem to be really thriving is on defense.

With the win over the Cougars, Melrose has limited opponents to just nine goals in three games and, according to coach Cate Arkins, their defense is proving key. “We’re playing well in our defensive zone, I’m happy with the number of turnovers we’re forcing and interceptions we complete. They’re doing a great job anticipating things on the field.”

Arkins points to the defensive efforts from players such as Gabby McDonnell, Rachel DiFraia, Shannon Jones and Katey Baraw, all of whom have forced turnovers and won vital ground balls.

On offense, Melrose was aided to victory by Maté, who had five goals, along with Haley Rodriguez (2 goals, 2 assists) Anna Steele (3 goals, 2 assists) and Katey Baraw (1 goal).

Finding the blend of offense and defense will be key for Melrose as they approach league play. “We have some adjustments to make as we prepare for league games,” says their coach. “But they’re small ones, mostly about communicating on the field. We have a few young players who are quickly figuring it out. Anything that is not working is really correctable.”

Melrose’s next test will this Friday when travel to Reading for a 4 p.m. game.
