WAKEFIELD—The Melrose High golf team picked up a key league win over rival Wakefield on the road at Thompson Country Club in North Reading on Sept. 20 by a score of 39-33.
Melrose (1-3 overall, 1-0 league) earned a squeaker over a young Warrior squad, with wins primarily from the mid to bottom of their lineup. After falling to Warriors in the first spot, Melrose’s Noah Fay won in the second spot over his Wakefield rival.
Junior Matthew Fuccione had a key tie in the #3 spot while a host of Melrose golfers prevailed below him in close holes, which included: Colin Walsh (#4) Dylan Harrington (#5) Brendan Healey (#6) Jack Wright (#7) and Aiden Ryan (#8).
Earlier in the season, Melrose coach Rick McDermod spoke of mixing up the lineup, adjusting alternates and in this case it paid off. Alternates Ben Kavanaugh and Tanner Kovacs also prevailed. Against Belmont, Melrose saw three ties courtesy of Colin Fahey, Dylan Harrington and Aiden Ryan.
