MELROSE—The Melrose High boy’s soccer team remains in the hunt for wins following a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Wakefield on the road on Sept. 11.
It was essentially a tale of two halves for Melrose (0-4), who came up empty in offense in the first while Wakefield found the net early. Melrose used two goalies in the game: Matteo Giovanardi and Owen Brown.
Melrose played better in the second, creating more scoring opportunities and overall ball possession. In this frame, Owen Brown subbed as goalie. Melrose finally found the net when Aiden Murphy scored on a beautiful one-time goal about 30 yards out beyond the reach of Wakefield goalie Moud Khaja.
With the game locked at 1-1 both teams fought for a game winner and that went to Wakefield standout Jack Millward who scored on a free kick (his 7th goal of the season)
Melrose was unable to find the net in the remaining 5 minutes and Wakefield took the ultimate 2-1 win. Their rematch is scheduled for October 9 at home.
In the meantime Melrose will continue their Freedom League play with road trips to Wilmington and Stoneham. They will return home on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 6:15 p.m.
