MELROSE—Melrose High School has released an update on the upcoming winter athletic season:
Effective December 1, 2020
Based on the recent guidelines established by the EEA, DESE, MIAA, Middlesex League, and Melrose Public Schools, and voted on by the School Committee, the following has been established for the Winter 2020-2021 Season
● Basketball, Gymnastics and Ice Hockey will take place this Winter Season. Tryouts/practices will begin the week of Monday, December 14th. More detailed tryout and practice schedules will be distributed the Week of 12/7.
● Indoor Track and Boys Swimming have been moved to the MIAA Fall 2 Season, with tentative season dates of 2/22/21-4/25/21.
● Wrestling has been moved to the MIAA Spring Season, with tentative season dates of 4/26/21-7/3/21.
● MASKS ARE REQUIRED AS SPECIFIED BY MIAA SPORT SPECIFIC RULE MODIFICATIONS for all participants and coaches at practices and games. In accordance with Melrose Public School health and safety policies, GAITERS ARE NOT PERMITTED for athletic participation.
● All student-athletes participating in a winter sport must have an IN-PERSON physical within the last 13 months (must be dated 12/11/19 or later) on file with the athletic office. The physical can be uploaded to Family ID with registration or the physical can be emailed to ddaglio@melroseschools.com. Despite the pandemic, the Massachusetts DPH will NOT accept physicals via telehealth for winter sports participation.
● The Middlesex League Teams will participate in a 10 game interscholastic schedule this winter. There is a possibility of a ML-12 Tournament for Varsity Teams during February vacation.
● Most sub-varsity games will be played on Saturdays, MLK Day, and during February Break.
● Melrose will compete against one school in all sports in the same week when possible to limit contact and exposure and to also help with contract tracing should it be needed at any point during the season.
● There will be no school-provided transportation provided to games, meets or matches in Melrose or in other communities. Families must provide transportation to practice during the week (as students will be arriving at practice from remote learning each afternoon) and on weekends and holidays for respective games.
● Varsity Teams will practice 3 times per week and Sub-Varsity Teams will practice 2 times per week throughout the season.
● Attendance at all practices and games will be strictly monitored. Every participating student will be required to answer an online questionnaire relative to COVID screening with their coach before the start of every team event during the season.
● There will be no spectators permitted at any athletic practice or contest this winter season. Attendance protocols will be strictly enforced in all locations.
● MHS High School User Fees will be collected for each student that earns a roster spot following the tryout process.

● Melrose High School will offer the following teams for the Winter 2020-2021 season. Rosters spots will be limited in size to ensure the health safety of players and staff. The number below is the maximum number of students allowed on any roster. Melrose High School will offer the following interscholastic teams for the Winter 2020-2021 season (actual registrations and interest will determine the final team offerings).
