SAUGUS—Congratulations are in order for two champion Melrose Mite hockey teams, who beat the competition recently to earn coveted league trophies.

Both the Melrose Mite A and Mite B2 teams won their respective league championships in the Valley Hockey League with action taking place at Kasabuski Rink in Saugus.

The Melrose MiteB2 team capped an amazing year of development with a 6-4 victory over Winthrop to be crowned the Mite North A Division Champions.  Will Colella, Oliver Drunkman, and Sam Parmet each scored two goals to power Melrose’s offense.  Dante Cieri-Figueroa played a great two-way game.  Owen Roy, Greyson Ciulla, and Diego Hurtado played shutdown defense and stymied Winthrop’s high-powered offense.  James Thompson, Ruihin Feng, and Dane Cafarella powered a relentless forecheck.  Sydney Dunphy was a brick wall between the pipes. They were led by talented coaches Kathryn Roy and Rob Dunphy.

Congratulations Mite B2! Cue the duck boats!

And the Melrose Mite A team proved a stunner. After a bumpy end to the regular season, the Mite A team turned into a red tsunami in the VHL playoffs, winning their play-in game last weekend over Wakefield 5-4 before downing top seeded Winthrop in the semi-finals (6-5 W) and very talented Reading team in the finals (5-4 W).  Led by the outstanding goaltending of Caden Kaulenas, Melrose prevailed in close games with stifling defense by Sparky Salsbury, Caroline Palmer, Marina Tonello, and Wesley Arsenault. At the other end of the ice, Brett Cafarella, Chase Henry, Colin Casey, George Peros, Liam McCarthy, Sam Marenghi, and Vivian Kealty all got on the score sheet with goals during the team’s championship run.

Congratulations to the VHL Mite North AA-White Champions, and coaches Jonathon Peros, Joe Kealty, and Scott Salsbury.

The future of Melrose hockey is looking bright!
