MELROSE—The Melrose High outdoor track team proved to be among the best in the division at the Div. 2 North Sectional finals held last weekend at Weston High. Several Melrose athletes earned medals on the day, helping Melrose secure a third place finish and a trip to All-States this weekend at Norwell High.

Among the top finishers were Anna Mackey, silver medalist in the 800, Taylor Pesce, silver medalist in the triple jump, and the team’s 4×800 relay team of Juliet Moore, Anna Mackey, Ella Fleming and Sydney Kroon. Additionally, Melrose saw a bronze medal performance from the 4×400 team of Lily Nolan, Taylor Pesce, Julia McAree and Hailey Keegan and another in the 4×400 thanks to the work of Katie Sikkema, Grace Donohue and Autumn Whelan. And Melrose’s representative in the pentathlon, Molly Lytje, powered her way to first place victory in the 800 meter leg of it, for an overall 5th place finish.

Melrose earned lots of points behind efforts from Sydney Kroon in the 800, Grace Donahue in the 400 hurdles, Katie Sikkema in the javelin, Hailey Keegan in the 200 dash—all of them placed fourth in their events.

Melrose’s long distance runners did well with Jillian Bakey placing 5th in the two mile and Charlotte Tysall placing 7th in the 1 mile. Autumn Whelan cracked the top 10 with an 8th place finish in the 400. Kaiya Thompson also looked sharp by coming in 9th in the long jump and 7th in the 100 hurdles. Meghan Radzik also had a solid 7th place finish in the triple jump.

After such a successful season, it’s no surprise that Melrose will send nearly ten athletes to the 2021 All State Finals held at Norwell High School from this weekend starting Thursday.

Representing Melrose will be Hailey Keegan (200 dash) Anna Mackey (800 meter) Grace Donohue (400 hurdles) Taylor Pesce (triple jump) and two relay teams. Melrose’s 4×800 relay team will consist of Juliet Moore, Sydney Kroon, Ella Fleming and Anna Mackey. Their qualified 4×400 meter relay team will be represented by Kate Sikkema, Autumn Whelan, Grace Donohue and Charlotte Tysall.

Stay tuned.
