Tysall sweeps field at Andover Boosters meet

MELROSE—The Melrose High girls’ outdoor track team had a successful showing at the 2019 Andover Booster’s Invitational held at Andover High on Saturday, May 11. Melrose freshmen phenom Charlotte Tysall earned gold, prevailing in the mile with a time of 5:24.32. 

Melrose’s performance comes on the heels of their dual meet victory over Burlington on May 8 at Pine Banks Park. The team now awaits the Middlesex League Meet this Thursday (post-deadline) at Burlington High where they are expected to bring home several medals.

Melrose had many athletes crack the top twenty in events at the Invitational, with two of their relay teams cracking the top 5. Melrose showed strength in the 400 hurdles with Giovanna Dos Santos Machado placing a strong 4th in the event and teammates Lytje Mollie and Selah Russell finishing 15th and 18th, respectively. Melrose also showed firepower in the 200 dash thanks to runs from Nora Daley (12th) and Nia Kovacev (19th). 

Kate Bidgood was strong in the 800 meter with a 15th place finish. In the high jump, Julia McAree and Taylor Pesce placed 11th and 19th, respectively. Nicole Nzui was 10th in the long jump, and in the triple jump Nia Kovacev was a very strong 8th and teammate Sophia Weissman 14th. Melrose relay teams all cracked the top ten. Their 4×100 relay came in 8th, their 800 sprint was 4th and 4×400 placed 7th. Alex Cotugno had a solid 6th place finish in the mile behind teammate Tysall with a time of 5:30. Jane Harrington also cracked the top twenty in the event with a time of 5:57. 

This week, Melrose is expected to earn plenty of hardware at the 2019 Middlesex League Championship at Burlington High. Look for full results in next week’s edition.
