STONEHAM—The Melrose High golf team wowed at the 2021 Middlesex League Shoot Out by sweeping their Freedom League competition and earning the ML Freedom Shoout title on Thursday, Sept. 30 at Bear Hill in Stoneham.

And their senior captain, Brian Healy, swept the competition to become the ML Freedom Shootout winner with a score of 80.

Earning the trophy as a team were the three Melrose representatives sent to Bear Hill that day: Brian Healy, Patrick Cotter and AJ Dell Isola.

“What a pleasant surprise,” said longtime Melrose coach Rick McDermod after the match. “Very happy for Brian, who came out on top. It was a great day of golf and the boys competed well.”

The collective group of Healy, Cotter and Dell Isola shot an 80, 84 and 85 respectively.

Coach McDermott notes that the team didn’t necessary anticiate such a result going in. “The team was a little shocked when the scores became apparent and it was clear that we were in the hunt for a title. It was exciting.”

At 3-3, Melrose has a busy week coming up. They will finish Freedom league competition against Wilmington and Burlington before hosting Lexington and Reading later in the month. A win over Wilmington and Burlington could put them in a position to once again earn a ML Freedom title.
