SAUGUS—The Melrose Red Raider hockey team took the Kasabuski Christmas Classic with a 4-1 win over Saugus in the final round of play on Thursday, Dec. 20. Melrose sits at a very healthy 5-0-1 on the season as they prepare for league rival Stoneham on the road Saturday night.

Against Saugus, Melrose showed power in their first two lines, which led to a quick breakaway goal by Melrose’s Quinn McCarthy past Saugus goalie Jack Deveraux four minutes into the game. Melrose’s Cam Marks had two goals, his first on a turnover that made it 2-0 Melrose as first period ended. The Red Raiders launched a flurry of shots in the first period, nearly 15 stopped by Deveraux.

Brendan Fennell had an excellent series, and against Saugus he scored on a power-play goal in the second. Saugus found the net on their only goal of the day courtesy of Joe Cross to make it a 3-1. But Melrose goalie Mark Dewling would allow no more, despite power plays that were shut own by Melrose’s excellent defense, with solid work from Liam Crovo.

Cam Marks finished the job with a goal with 8:50 left in the game.

The win came on the heels of their opening round, 6-1 win against Triton on Dec. 20. Melrose took a quick 1-0 lead thanks to a Quinn McCarthy goal at 5:16. Triton’s Jack Forrest scored the Viking’s only goal of the day shortly after. Melrose made it a 2-1 game moments later when Liam Crovo scored unassisted past the reach of goalie Ben Fougere. The Red Raiders followed that up with a pair of goals from Brendan Fennell and Sean Senier. Senier went on to score again in the third to help Melrose reach a 6-1 final.

This Saturday they look to continue their winning ways when they face Stoneham on the road at Stoneham Arena for a 6:00 p.m. clash.
