MELROSE—As the Melrose Red Raider boys’ hockey team approaches mid season they’re right on track with 10 points towards playoff qualification and an overall 5-4 record after a league win over rival Stoneham on Saturday, January 7. Frosh Brendan Fennell had a hat trick for Melrose while teammates Cam Marks and Shea Champagne poured it on in the second half with two goals a piece.

Despite falling to 3-2 deficit in the first, Melrose was competitive with goals from Shea Champagne and Brendan Fennell. By the second, Melrose’s offense picked up the game, digging deep to pull off three goals: two from Cam Marks and another from Champagne to flip the game 5-4, advantage Melrose at the end of the second. Defensively, Melrose held tight in the third, with Melrose goalie Mark Dewling containing any late game shots. And Champagne and Fennell weren’t done with the scoring, each chipping in with third period scores that lifted Melrose to a 7-4 final.

Melrose has a challenging stretch ahead, including a bid against undefeated Burlington, and a key league game against rival Wakefield on Saturday, but after performing competitively in Freedom League play, the Red Raiders seem poised for the challenge.
