Wins over Wildcats & Pioneers keep Melrose 3-2

MELROSE—The Melrose Red Raider hoop team has clawed their way to the top of the Middlesex Freedom League after back-to-back wins this week against Lynnfield and Wilmington which keeps them with a winning 3-2 record. 

On Dec. 30 Melrose traveled to Lynnfield High to take on the Pioneers and enjoyed a 60-47 victory.

Melrose took a first quarter lead of 19-10 that they never lost. Melrose’s Joe Collozzo scored 7 first quarter points, including a trey, while Dylan Vienot (team high 15 points) found the net and delivered on the foul line (5-8 for the night). Luka Vlajkovich and Frantz Pierrot both found the basket twice in the second but the Hornets closed the gap, 30-26 at halftime behind the efforts of Billy Arsenault (16 points) and Zach Shane (10). Melrose pulled away in the third, scoring 18 points behind the efforts of Vienot, Joe Stanton, Chris Cusolito (11 points). Melrose clinched the win, 60-47.

Melrose continued their road trip on Tuesday evening when they traveled to Wilmington to face the Wildcats and walked away with a 67-54 victory. Leading in offense for Melrose was Luka Vlajkovich with 13 points and Joe Stanton with 12. Melrose took an early lead of 15-13 and expanded that, 34-26, at the half. Melrose maintained a 15 point lead in the third and finished the job off with a 67-54 victory that gave them their third victory of the season.

Melrose will host Stoneham (0-4) Friday evening, Jan. 5 at 7:00 p.m. (weather permitting) as they hope to pick up another league win.
