MELROSE—The Melrose High gymnastics team picked up their first win of the season with a 137.64-131.5 victory over Arlington on Monday, January 14 at Arlington High. Melrose took each event overall and scored their highest marks in the vault (35.3). On Monday, they will travel to Woburn High to take on a competitive Tanners team at noon, when they hope to make it two victories in a row. 

Melrose’s Katie Wright had another strong night for Melrose, as did Brooke Barriss, who earned the highest score of the night: a 9.1 in the vault. Also having a solid showing was Lucia Hannon, a three event athlete who scored strongly for Melrose.

Melrose’s vault team got the job done thanks to Brooke Heidebrecht, Taylor Pesce, Nicole Nuzi, Ciara Smith, Barriss and Wright. Melrose held a 35.3-34.45 lead heading into the second even of the night, bars, where they dominated 33.4-29.85 behind the work of Ciara Smith, Katie Wright, Lucia Hannon, Sophia Weissman, Barriss and Jane Harrington. 

Melrose edged Arlington slightly in the beam with a score of 33.85-33.75. Scoring first for Melrose was Ciara Smith, followed by Katie Wright, Lucia Hannon, Sophia Weissman, Elana Simard and Jane Harrington. Katie Wright led with an event-high score of 9.0 in the floor; behind her was a strong Melrose floor team of Ciara Smith, Lucia Hannon, Elana Simard, Gabrielle Prodgers and Caroline Fogarty.
