ALGONQUIN—The Melrose High girl’s gymnastics team finished their season off with a solid postseason appearance at the 2020 MIAA North Sectional Finals held on Feb. 25 at Algonquin Regional High.

Melrose had a nice showing with 135.900 points and a 7th place finish behind winner, Masconomet. The team enjoyed their best event on the vault, with a score of 34.95. Melrose senior captain Katie Wright was Melrose’s top scorer with a 35.6. Wright earned three scores in the 9.0’s including 9.1 in the vault, 9.2 in the beam and 9.1 on floor.

Teammate Ciara Smith also competed all around with solid results, including a 8.525 on beam and a strong 8.9 on floor. Also representing Melrose at Sectionals was Grace Burke, Taylor Pesce (floor, vault), Jane Harrington (bars, beam) Lucy Hannon, Sofia Pitcher, Gabrielle Prodgers (beam, floor) Sofia Weissman and Elana Simard. Senior Nicole Nzui, meanwhile, had a very strong 9.0 on the vault.

This marks the end of Melrose’s very successful 6-2 season. Melrose only fell to two rivals over the season, Wakefield and Reading, who both cracked at the top four at Sectionals. All three teams will look to battle each other again next season for ML bragging rights.

Melrose head Coach Denise Valdez says goodbye to five seniors, including Nicole Nzui, Jane Harrington, Gabrielle Prodgers, Ciara Smith and Katie Wright.
