MELROSE—The Melrose Red Raider tennis team has been on the upswing in the last four years, victors of four straight league titles and fresh off a twelve win season in 2017, when they advanced to Div. 2 North semifinals in playoffs.

This year the bar has been set, and while Melrose will have some holes to fill on the roster, they also return with league all-stars ready to maintain Melrose’s winning tradition. That includes senior captains Jason Jang and Caleb Zimmerman, who will compete in singles play. According to Melrose head coach Matt Williams, both Middlesex League All Stars have the ability to compete in first singles. “They are excellent players who are often playing at the same level. They’re also great leaders. We’re in good hands with these two.”

Other returners include Ryan Locke, Eamonn Burke, Eli Coleman, Russell Darwin, Patrick Donahue, James Frederick, Jon Harriot, Griffin Castergine, Zack Zibatis, Will Moore, Tyler Janzen, William Gray, Jack Summersby, Owen Markham, and Sava Vlajkovic.

Last season, Melrose enjoyed a dominant year with a 12-4 record. “We’re proud of the work we’ve done, winning the league four years now,” says Williams. “This year, we’re optimistic but are also setting realistic goals because we have new players and new opportunities.”

One of those new players includes promising freshman Nick Koen, who should see time in pairs. “Nick has great, raw talent. I’m excited about this player. He’s going to be huge for us in years to come.” There is also great hopes for Henry MacDonnell, who could see time at third singles. “I’m really optimistic about him,” says Williams.

As for the competition? Count of league rival Burlington to push Melrose along this season. The two teams have battled for league supremacy for many years now. “I’m sure Burlington will be up there. I think most of the Freedom league is about the same competitive level. Many teams have lost seniors, so it could be up for grabs.”

Of course, ML Large competition dominates statewide tennis (Winchester, Lexington, Belmont), but don’t be shocked to see Melrose go toe-to-toe with some of these league rivals. With Melrose showing experience and athleticism, coach Williams is already seeing strength.

“In the short time we’ve been outside, I’m already seeing improvement so I’m really optimistic,” he says.

Melrose opens at home on Wednesday against Lexington (weather permitting) and will travel to Arlington on Friday to take on the Spy Ponders. Action starts at 3:45 p.m.
