MELROSE—Melrose High volleyball senior captain Emma Randolph was named to the 2019 Massachusetts Girl’s Volleyball Coaches Associations’ Div. 2 All State team after leading the Melrose High volleyball team to a 19-4 season and Middlesex Freedom League title.

It is just another achievement earned by #20, who broke the MHS record in scoring this season with 900 kills (323 this year) and for her efforts was named the co-MVP of the Middlesex Freedom League.

The outside hitter competed with the state’s best on Nov. 18 at the MGVCA All-State Showcase held at Westborough High. Her coach, Scott Celli, was also selected to coach the Div. 2 team.

“It was a great honor to have been selected to represent the Melrose volleyball program especially playing at such a high level,” says Randolph. “It was really fun to play with some of the best in state and with some girls I played against during the season. Overall, it was an awesome experience.”

Randolph graduates a four-year letterman and reflects on her record-breaking journey. One of her favorite memories is playing in the state championship game in 2017. Though they fell to Westborough in 5 sets, it was a valuable experience for Randolph. “The competitive atmosphere really helped me improve my game overall at such a young age,” she comments.

Growing up as a fan of MHS alum player Hannah Brickley, Randolph was once inspired be just like her. Sure enough, she broke Brickley’s scoring record last month. “I grew up watching Hannah and many talented players so it was humbling to see that I made as much impact on the program as they once did,” she notes. “It was always a goal, but I couldn’t have achieved this if our team wasn’t so successful and if, for instance, our setter wasn’t getting good passes from back row.”

As for future plans, Randolph certainly had her share of college recruitment and will pursue a Div. 1 club participation at a university where she can focus on strong academics and an overall atmospheric fit.
