Melrose defeats Watertown 4-3 (May 16)

SWAMPSCOTT — In a non-league game on Monday afternoon, the Melrose High softball team lost at Swampscott, 12-3, on a warm, sunny day.

“We played well defensively,” said Melrose assistant coach Frank Sorrenti, as his squad committed only two errors. “Emi (Judge) also did not give up any walks.”

Judge pitched all six innings in the circle. She gave up 12 runs (11 earned), 14 hits, no walks and she struck out two.

The Big Blue, who improved to 4-7, scored four times in the second inning, once in the third, six times in the fourth and one more time in the bottom of the sixth.

Melrose scored twice in the top of the first and once in the fourth.

The offense had four hits overall led by Brynn Baker who was a perfect 2 for 2 with a walk and two runs batted in as she had RBI singles in the second and fourth innings.

Kate Stratford had an RBI drawing a bases-loaded walk in the second.

Paige Crovo and Ava Viola had the two other Melrose hits.

On May 9, the Melrose lost in Wilmington, 14-2, in a five-inning mercy-rule game. The Wildcats, who swept the season series, scored twice in the first inning. They then plated six runs in the second and third innings.

“They have a good-hitting team,” said Sorrenti.

Melrose scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

In the fourth inning, Penny Schulz had an RBI double that plated Stratford, who also doubled. Viola, who was 3 for 3, scored on a passed ball in the fifth inning

Melrose had five total hits.

On May 20, Melrose hosts Belmont at 4:30 p.m. at Pine Banks in their final Middlesex League game of the season. They then travel to Haverhill to take on Whittier Tech in a non-league game on May 22 at 4 p.m.

Melrose wraps up the season on May 23 at Pine Banks as they host Swampscott. That game will start at 4:15 p.m.
