MELROSE — The Melrose High softball team is off to a solid start after back-to-back wins over Latin Academy and Arlington this week. Fueled by pitching from Alex McGuire and solid appearances by batters at the plate, Melrose finds themselves at 2-2 with key Freedom League games on the horizon.

“So far we are doing well,” says Melrose head coach Steve Wall. “We are in every game and Alex has done well pitching. Our bats are coming around.”

McGuire has started each game paired with battery mate Liz Sherman. Familiar faces in the infield include Saoirse Connolly at first, Victoria Crovo at short and Ali Borenstein at second. Some faces in the outfield include senior Alyssa Gorman, Rachel Pheiffer and Peri McDonald.

Offensively, Melrose has seen a contribution from the entire squad, with McGuire, Connolly, Crovo and Gorman making up the top of the lineup. Those bats came up big in the team’s 7-3 victory over Arlington on Monday morning at Pine Banks Park. McGuire took to the mound with 4 strikeouts on the day. Leading in hitting were Sam Farrell, Alyssa Gorman and Ali Borenstein, who all had 2 hits, and Melrose’s Rachel Phieffer had an incredible catch in center to help clinch the victory.

The effort comes after a much larger victory over Latin Academy on Wednesday, April 13 by a score of 14-1. Melrose’s Victoria Crovo had a massive game for Melrose, going 3-4 at the plate with 4 RBIs, while McGuire picked up the win.

After traveling to Lexington on Wednesday (post deadline) Melrose will travel to Wilmington on Friday to begin Freedom League games. First pitch on Friday is at 10 a.m.
