MELROSE—The Middlesex League softball coaches met recently to select their all-star teams and one member of the Melrose High team made the roster.

That player was Ava Viola who made the ML Freedom division team for the second year in a row. The junior captain played 19 games hitting .446 with eight runs batted in and one homer.

Viola led the team in several offensive categories as she had a slugging percentage of .667 and an on-base-percentage of .483. She had a team-high, 25 hits and four walks tying Brynn Baker for walks leader. Viola also struck out a team-low six times.

“She had a terrific season,” stated Melrose assistant coach Frank Sorrenti. She’s very coachable and dedicated to improving. She is a quiet leader for us.”

Sorrenti also praised her unselfishness by moving positions out in the field.  “Ava and Paige (Crovo the other junior captain), both switched positions this year to give us some flexibility on defense this year,” pointed out Sorrenti. “She started the year playing first base and moved to shortstop.”

Melrose finished without a win in the league, but the good news is that the team did improve throughout the season and, with no seniors on the roster, the whole team is slated to return next spring.
