That every year some individual or local group comes up big for the Gately Funeral Home’s October fundraiser in support of the Melrose Veteran’s Fund.  One year a local woman who wanted to remain anonymous gave $1,000. Another year, local Girl Scouts raised money for the event. Because of the novel coronavirus, the fundraising dinner could not be held at Giacomo’s in 2020 but plenty of people kicked in to help raise $6,600, which includes a match from the Gatelys. Wendy Golini donated $1,501 in memory of her dad Marty DiMeo, a World War II veteran whose plane was shot down and who spent time as a prisoner of war.
