MELROSE — Mrs. Carolyn “Carol” (Peebles) McLain, 91, longtime Melrose resident, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Saugus Nursing Center. 

Carol was born on January 28, 1927 to Professor Waldo C. Peebles of Boston University and Elinore J. (Cutting) Peebles in Newton. She attended Chapel Hill School in Waltham, graduating in 1945 and Boston University, graduating in 1949. She did graduate work at Boston University School of Education and taught second grade in Manchester by the Sea. She also worked as a library assistant at Northeastern Law School Library and as a cashier at Jordan Marsh book store in Boston.

In 1953 she married Dr. Minor H. McLain who later became a professor of History at Salem State College. She was deeply interested in homeopathy and the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg.

Carol is the beloved wife of the late Minor H. McLain with whom she shared nearly 60 years of marriage. Devoted mother of Susan E. Saunders of Melrose, and Andrew H. McLain of Lynn. Dear sister of the late Robert M. Peebles and Dr. Thomas C. Peebles. Cherished grandmother of Kimberly J. Saunders, and Kenneth E. E. Saunders Jr. Proud great-grandmother of Terrence Dominic Christopher Wilson. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
