MELROSE — Charles A. Bennett, 79, of Melrose passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at Courtyard Nursing Care Center in Medford after a battle with prostate cancer.

Charles was born in South Boston on September 21, 1939 to the late John Francis and Helen M. (Keating) Bennett. Charles grew up as one of eight children in South Boston and Roslindale graduating from Roslindale High and then earning a B.S. in Business from Suffolk University class of 1963. Charles went on to work in the insurance industry throughout his life, only retiring in the last few years.

Charles was an avid sports fan, especially baseball and football, and enjoyed both watching and playing. He loved being able to pass that passion on to his children and coached them in various sports throughout their lives. Charles was easy to find on Sundays, always in his easy chair surrounded by various newspapers and waiting for the sporting events of the day to begin.

Charles is survived by his wife, Anne T. (Gallagher) of Melrose, daughters Melissa Gillespie and her husband Joe, of West Roxbury and Meghan A. Bennett of Melrose as well as sons John G. Bennett of Melrose and the late James C. Bennett of Florida. He was the beloved brother of the late Thomas F. Bennett and his wife Elaine of Calif., the late John F. Bennett and his late wife Mary of Fla., Helen M. Gerty and her husband Joe of Calif, Albert “Buster” Bennett and his wife Wanda Bennett of Fla., Rosemary MacQuarrie and her husband Doug of Duxbury, William Bennett and his wife Barbara of Pa., and Carole Ann Bennett of Fla. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Brendan, Aidan and Caitlyn Bennett, Kathleen, Joseph, John and James Gillespie of West Roxbury along with Carla Bennett of West Roxbury.

Charles was a long time member of the Incarnation Parish where a Memorial Mass was held on June 28 and he was remembered by family and friends.
