MELROSE — On Wednesday, December 18, 2019, David Alan McMahon, 84, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully at Lawrence-Memorial Hospital in Medford.

Born April 1, 1935, to the late Robert and Bertha (Symes) McMahon in Everett and raised in Malden, David served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 while stationed in Korea. After receiving his honorable discharge, he married Barbara A. Mullett in 1958. While raising his family and working as an engineer at EG&G in Salem, he earned a B.S. in Geology in 1960 and an MBA in 1980, both from Boston University.

In addition to his family and work commitments, David served as chairman of the Melrose Conservation Commission for 15 years, working to preserve city land for future generations. A lifelong athlete, he enjoyed golfing and playing hockey with his friends and family, as well as coaching Melrose youth hockey and baseball teams. He will be well remembered for his wry sense of humor and unwavering moral compass.

David was the beloved husband of Barbara (Mullett) McMahon with whom he shared 61 years of marriage. Devoted father of Carol McMahon of Atlanta, Ga., Patricia McMahon of Hooksett, N.H., Richard McMahon Sr. of Atlanta, Ga., William McMahon of Melrose, James McMahon and his wife Natalie of Derry, N.H., and Thomas McMahon of Melrose. Dear brother of Bradley McMahon and his wife LaMonde of Austin, Texas, and the late Gail McMahon. Cherished grandfather of Amanda, Patrick, Craig, Kathleen, Kevin, Richard Jr., and Samantha. Loving great-grandfather of Patrick, Grace, Woodes, and Audrey.

Relatives and friends were invited to gather in honor of David’s life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Sunday, Dec. 22. Funeral Service was private.
