MELROSE — Esther P. “Terry” Murphy, of Melrose, formerly of Somerville, died on October 14, 2021 at the age of 85. She was predeceased by her parents, Alfred and Annie (Henshon) Akins, her sisters Mary (Akins) Darcy and Shirley (Akins) Salm. Beloved wife of the late Edward W. Murphy – 40 year employee of W.R. Grace &Co. in Cambridge and decorated combat medic during the Korean conflict. Esther leaves behind her son, Attorney Edward “Ted” Murphy and his wife, Jennifer and her grandchild, Courtney, all of Lexington.

Esther was a graduate of the Bryant &Stratton School of Business and took courses later in life at Tufts University. She was employed for many years at Liberty Mutual, and following her retirement, the Hilltop Steakhouse as a hostess.

Esther’s granddaughter, Courtney, was her passion. Esther also loved being with all members of her extended family, attending community events, visiting Plymouth, MA and reading. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the entire staff of Melrose-Wakefield Hospital who helped her wage a heroic, but comfortable battle against the brief illness that took her life.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose from 10:30-11 a.m. prior to an 11 a.m. funeral service at the Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend any or all three portions of the service.
