MELROSE — Frank J. Mogavero, 77, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away surrounded by his family at home on Tuesday, June 25, 2019

Frank was born in Boston on September 6, 1941, one of five children of the late Frank and Catherine (Buttaleri) Mogavero. Raised in Roxbury, Frank graduated from East Boston High School and enlisted in the United States Navy at age 18. Frank proudly served his country aboard the USS Gearing during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was honorably discharged after four years serving from 1960 to 1964 as a Seaman, 3rd Class. Frank forever remained a patriotic American and proud Navy veteran.

After his discharge, Frank began working at Cerratani’s Market in Melrose where he met Mary MacDonald and fell in love. Frank and Mary were married on February 20, 1972 and made their home in Melrose to raise two children. A family man, Frank enjoyed their yearly summer trips with their two children to Lake George in New York. At home in Melrose, he enjoyed barbecuing with his family, and cherished anytime spent with his three grandchildren.

In his free time, Frank enjoyed gardening especially growing tomatoes and peppers, relaxing while fishing, and supporting the Red Sox, Patriots and Bruins. He had a love for the water, going to the movies, and collecting intricate model ships to display at home. For many years, Frank enjoyed visiting the Lake Winnipesaukee region in New Hampshire, or visiting the beach with his family.

Frank was a sociable, friendly man with a quick, sometimes sarcastic wit, who loved to converse with people. He had a natural ability to connect with anyone, and made many friends while working at Trader Joe’s for the last 10 years in Saugus. A longtime grocery store employee, Frank also worked for several years as the manager of the front desk at the Ramada Inn in East Boston.

Frank will be deeply missed, but always lovingly remembered for his strong will, warm and loving spirit, and endearing sense of humor.

Frank was the beloved husband of Mary E. (MacDonald) Mogavero with whom he shared 47 years of marriage. Devoted father of Timothy Mogavero and his wife Karen of Woburn, and Tami Toomey and her husband Brian of Woburn. Caring brother of Virginia Mogavero of Saugus, Constance Oloughlin of Texas, Robert Mogavero and his wife Catherine of Marlborough, Richard Mogavero and his wife Irene of Haverhill, and brother-in-law of Bruce MacDonald and his late wife Beverly of San Diego, Calif. Cherished grandfather of Grace Toomey and Sarah and Jason Mogavero. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends were invited to gather in honor and remembrance of Frank during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Sunday, June 30 with a special time for remembrance. Military honors were presented by the U.S. Navy. Gifts in Frank’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3 Speen St., Ste. 250, Framingham, MA 01701.
