An avid sports fan who enjoyed Disney, camping and Halloween

MELROSE — Gerard Edgar “Jerry” Smith, 65, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.

The Massachusetts State Lottery lost one of it’s best customers on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021. Jerry was born in Salem on November 23, 1955, one of two children of the late Edgar Smith and Helen (Mackey) Smith. He was raised in Beverly and graduated from Beverly High School in 1973. Jerry continued his education at Boston State College, graduating in 1977. Throughout high school and college, he excelled at playing lacrosse. Jerry was most passionate about his wife Jeannie, and also loved all the dogs that shared his life, all Boston sports, the 3 Stooges, Disney, camping, the Topsfield Fair, gardening, Halloween and any show that made him laugh. He worked for 46 years as a deli clerk at several local Shaw’s and Star Markets.

Jerry was beloved husband of Jeanne M. (Kelly) Smith with whom he shared 34 years of marriage. Cherished brother of Julie Smith Fleming and her husband, Charlie, of Beverly. Loving son-in-law of Doris A. (Waddington) Kelly and the late John J. Kelly. Caring brother-in-law of Judith Kelly and her husband, David Bowditch, of Bedford; James Kelly and his wife, Barbara, of Griffin, GA; Joyce Costello and her husband, John Feehly, of Billerica; Jennifer Kelly of Gloucester and the late John J. Kelly, Jr. and his wife, Teresa, of Melrose. Dear uncle of Kerri Koncius and her husband, Adam; Dan Fleming; Laura Kelly Bowditch and her husband, Will Allured; Rebecca Kelly Bowditch, JJ Kelly, Jessica Kelly, Jenna Kelly; Stephanie Carti and her husband, Dave; and Rachel Costello. Loving great-uncle of AJ, Aidan, Asher, Nolan and Connor.

Relatives and friends were invited to visiting hours at Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Tues. Nov. 2 from 4-8 p.m., and for his Funeral service at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 8 Prospect St., Saugus celebrated on Wed. Nov. 3 at 11 a.m. All are kindly asked to wear face masks.
