MELROSE — Irene C. (Campatelli) Maffei, 94, of Melrose, died peacefully on August 26, 2018.
Irene was born in East Boston on August 18, 1924 to the late Gino and Stella Campatelli. She was raised in East Boston and graduated from East Boston High School. Irene worked for Royal Globe Insurance for many years. She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing word searches in her spare time. Irene was also a devote Catholic and enjoyed watching the Boston Catholic Mass on television. There was nothing more important than family to Irene. She raised her own family in East Boston and later moved to Melrose to take part in raising her grandchildren. She cherished family gatherings and outings.
Irene was the beloved wife of the late Nicholas S. Maffei. Loving mother of Dolores Porziella and her husband Giuliano of Melrose, and the late Nicholas R. Maffei. Caring grandmother of Julian Porziella of Malden, Gregory Porziella and his wife Lindsay of Malden, and Vanessa Surette and her husband Christopher of Saugus. Proud great-grandmother of Giuliana and Antonio Surette of Saugus.
Visiting hours were held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose, on Wednesday, August 29. A funeral Mass was held at St. Joseph – St. Lazarus Church, 59 Ashley St., East Boston, on Thursday. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden. Relatives and friends were respectfully invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hallmark Health VNA and Hospice, 178 Savin St., Suite 300, Malden, MA 02148.
