A dedicated mother who enjoyed dancing and going out with friends

MELROSE — Janet Paterson, 84, resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2021 at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.

Janet was born on April 25, 1937 and raised in Meriden, Connecticut by her parents the late Stanley and Helen Tycz. She had one older sister Eleanor who currently lives in Pennsylvania.

Janet attended Endicott College and married Donald Paterson. They lived in Watertown where they welcomed their first daughter Laura. When expecting their second daughter Erica they moved to Melrose where she lived the rest of her entire life.

She was a homemaker and dedicated mother. She was active in her children’s activities including volunteering at the YMCA, several years of being a Campfire Girl Leader, coaching and helping with the town tennis programs.

The family spent many weekends at the cottage and chalet in New Hampshire. During these years she also enjoyed league bowling, playing tennis, doing puzzles and occasionally playing golf.

After she and husband Don went their separate ways, she did not remarry but had two serious relationships. She had various jobs over the next several years including working for a children’s retail store and working for home-based businesses such as Dutchmaid, Avon and a tee shirt business.

She enjoyed going out to dinner, dancing, and socializing with her friends and family and watching game shows, especially Jeopardy. She was the proud grandmother to Allison and Christopher.

She leaves behind daughters Laura Balcom and Erica Nagy, son in law Thomas Nagy and grandchildren Allison Nagy and Christopher Nagy.

Burial services for Janet will be private. A celebration of life memorial will be held in January.
