A loving mother and grandmother who was kind hearted and empathetic

MELROSE — Jewel (Babson) Cook, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully at The Elmhurst Healthcare on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, at age 94.

Jewel was born in Stoneham on April 11, 1928, the daughter of the late William and Doris (Weeks) Babson. She was raised in Melrose where she graduated from Melrose High School. After her marriage on October 18, 1950 to Arthur Cook, she settled in the house her grandmother had built in 1926 in Melrose, and lived there for the rest of her life.

With simple needs in life, Jewel was happiest in the comfort of her Melrose home. She took pride in maintaining the home, and always stayed busy puttering around the house. In her childhood, she learned how to fish and clam off the beaches of Gloucester, and later in life enjoyed the White Mountains of New Hampshire with husband, Arthur. For many years, she and Arthur enjoyed traveling together to Prince Edward Island, the Thousand Islands, New Hampshire, Florida, and Cape Cod.

In her free time, she enjoyed reading romance novels, knitting, and making her spaghetti and meatballs. Even into her 90’s, she somehow managed to thrive on her love of Haagen-Dazs coffee ice cream, and Marshmallow Fluff.

A loving mother, and doting grandmother, Jewel was dedicated to family, and considered her role in the family as her priority in life. She was a kind hearted, empathetic woman with a strong independent streak, and incredible will. She will be deeply missed, but always lovingly remembered.

Jewel was the beloved wife of Arthur L. Cook with whom she shared 72 years of marriage. Devoted mother of Robert Cook of Waltham. Cherished grandmother of Christiana Hogue and her husband Daniel of SD, Jamee Coulter-Cook of Waltham, and Nathaniel Coulter-Cook of Waltham. Proud great-grandmother of Kian and Aria Hogue. Former mother-in-law of Laura Coulter of Waltham.

Relatives and friends were invited to gather in honor of Jewel’s life at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose for her funeral service on Thursday, September 22 at 11 a.m. For online tribute visit RobinsonFuneralHome.com.
