Joan R. (Labate) Lavina, 98, passed away at the Melrose Healthcare Facility on May 10, 2019.

Joan was born in Chelsea on October 3, 1920 to the late Aphonso and Maria (Patano) Labate. She was raised in Chelsea, graduated from Chelsea High School and has been a resident of Melrose since 1955.

Joan was a dedicated wife and mother who worked as a secretary in the Veteran’s Office for the City of Melrose for several years. Mrs. Lavina was very involved in the Ladies Auxillary at the VFW Beachmont Post #6712 in Revere, was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Church and volunteered at church for many years.

Joan was the beloved wife of the late John J. Lavina. Loving mother of Richard P. Lavina and his wife Kathy of Puerto Rico and the late Joan Vegan and John J. Lavina III. Caring sister of Pauline Prezioso of Saugus and Connie Smith of Revere. Cherished grandmother of 13 grandchildren, numerous great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Friday, May 17 from 4-8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary’s Church, 9 Herbert St., Melrose on Saturday, May 18 at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend.
