MELROSE — John L. Christopher passed away at his home in Melrose after a brief illness surrounded by his loving family.

John was born in Boston, was raised in Chelsea, attended Chelsea Schools and has been a resident of Melrose for the past 56 years. He joined the National Guard and served his country with pride for four years in the 181st Infantry Division. Mr. Christopher was the beloved custodian at the Beebe Elementary School in Melrose from 1967 to 2001 and enjoyed getting his school picture taken with the rest of the kids every single year. John was very proud to receive an Excellence in Education Award from the school department. He was an avid Bruins fan and enjoyed watching his grandson play hockey and attending all of his grandchildren’s events.

John loved getting together with his coffee crew every morning and could be seen walking 3-5 miles a day all around Melrose. Mr. Christopher enjoyed puttering around his home and yard, was a member of the North Shore Irish Club, and enjoyed traveling with his late wife Katie and their kids to Cape Cod, Canada, Washington, D.C. and New Hampshire. But above all he was a dedicated and loyal husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many.

John was the beloved husband of the late Kathleen B. “Katie” (Sullivan) Christopher. Loving father of Eric J. Christopher of Melrose and Sean P. Christopher and his wife Jennifer (Fresco) of Stoneham. Cherished grandfather of Mikaila and Brendan. Caring brother of Claire Burke and her husband Robert, Edward Testa and his wife Elaine and Cindy Testa. Devoted nephew of Lawrence Christopher and his wife Jean. Dear friend of Eleanor and Bart Galvin, Thomas Vennochi, as well as numerous other extended loving family members and friends.

Visitation was held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Monday, June 22. Guests wore masks and were encouraged to greet the family, pay their respects and exit the funeral home to allow other guests to enter. Family and friends were also welcome to come to the funeral home on Tuesday morning prior to the graveside service at Wyoming Cemetery.
